The only Mayo side to have been afforded the luxury of a draw in this weekend’s fourth round of the Connacht Cup is Iorras Aontaithe who will entertain Galway League side St Brendan’s on Sunday in the Barony of Erris. The other half- a-dozen Mayo sides left in the competition will all be packing up and heading all over the province as they look for a place in the fifth round of the competition. Castlebar Celtic will be hoping they will have a happy trip north when they take on Sligo League outfit Aclare Celtic. Last year’s Connacht Shield winners and Mayo League Premier A champions Ballyheane have been riding a wave of success this past 12 months and they hope it will continue on Sunday when they face West United from the Galway Premier League. While Ballyheane face the men from West United, the defending champions Westport United will also face Galway opposition in the shape of East United. Manulla will also be heading to Galway city to take on Mervue United in what looks to be a very tricky away tie for the men from Carramore. Also on the road on Sunday are Charlestown Athletic who will be looking to keep up their surprise run to this stage when they take on Loughrea in the fifth round. The action in the cup for Mayo sides actually gets under way on Saturday night when Fahy Rovers take on Shiven Rovers from the Roscommon and District League at 7.30pm.

Mayo soccer supporters will be hoping that Ballina Town and Westport United will be able to follow in the footsteps of Castlebar Celtic and book their place in the sixth round of the Umbro FAI Junior Cup on Sunday.

The service of two football men in Mayo has been recognised this year by the Mayo Football League. Both Donal Benson, Swinford, and Aiden King, Westport, have been announced recently as the inaugural winners of the Henry Downes Service to Football award for 2012.

The run-away Super League champions have half a dozen players picked in the 4-3-3 formation team of the season. Gary Cunningham gets the nod in goal with Martin Geraghty and Shaun Tagg the centre back pairing. In the middle of the park David Cameron is one of three midfielders with both JP O’Gorman and David Hoban making up two thirds of the strike force. Both Claremorris and Ballina Town have received two nods, with full back pairing of James Stretton and Andrew Shally claiming the awards for the south Mayo men. Michael Duffy earned a spot in the midfield three with Brendan Lavelle picking up his award in the front line. The last spot on the team went to Castlebar Celtic’s Ger O’Boyle whose good form saw him called up to the Irish junior side, before cruelly picking up an injury just before the game.

The Mayo League’s representative senior side will make the trek to Letterkenny to take on the Donegal League in their opening game of the 2011 Oscar Traynor Trophy on Sunday. Michael Hutton will be once again in charge of the Mayo League side, and the Claremorris manager will be hoping to guide his side out of a tricky group that also includes the Sligo/Leitrim League and the Innishowen League. Mayo warmed up for this weekend’s game with a game away to the Roscommon League a few weeks ago. In a fortnight’s time Mayo will host the Sligo/Leitrim League in the second round of the competition, before finishing up with another long away trip to the Innishowen League on a date yet to be fixed.

The Mayo League this week have revealed the winners of their various monthly awards for August and September this week. The club of the month award for August went to Urlar United with the September award going to Partry Athletics. The manager of the month awards went to Michael Moran (Castlebar Celtic B) for August, and Michael Carroll (Urlar United) for September.

The last of the trophies will be handed out by the Mayo League on Sunday afternoon when the Connacht Gold Cup and Shield finals take place in Milebush. With the league season coming to an end last weekend (with the exception of the three-way play off in the Welcome Inn League 2 for second place and relegation matters in Premier A) all eyes will be on Milebush on Sunday. The shake up in the promotion and relegation races took another step towards finality last weekend across the divisions in the Mayo League. In the Super League, Manulla all but made sure that they would be in the Super League next season, by seeing off Fahy Rovers thanks to a Dessie Campbell double. The Manulla veteran’s free kick five minutes from time was enough to seal a come from behind 2-1 win over the Fahy Rovers, who are battling it out at the bottom to avoid the drop with Manulla. Straide and Foxford’s relegation was confirmed with a 5-1 defeat at home to Iorras Aontaithe. In the battle to make the jump into the top division, last weekend saw a number of big moments in the Premier A. Conn Rangers went into the weekend leading the table, but a postponment of their game against Bangor Hibs offered both Ballyheane and Snugboro United a chance to pull ahead of them at the top for now. Ballyheane went to Swinford and Sungboro United to Clew Bay United. In both games the victor came from behind to win, but more importantly in the chase for the top, Sungboro United lost 3-2 after Clew Bay United came from behind twice to take the points. Ballyheane came from one down away to Swinford to run out 3-1 winners and go to the top of the table for now at least.

With the Super League done and dusted for a while now, the race to make it into the top division next season is where all eyes will be this Sunday. With three games to go Conn Rangers are top on 24 points, with Ballyheane and Snugboro right behind them on 23 points. This weekend Conn Rangers will host Bangor Hibs in Mount Falcon, but in their final two games they will have to face both of the sides right behind them. They will have to travel to Quigley Park to face Ballyheane in their second last game, with Snugboro United coming to their patch on the final day.
